Even a Hula Hoop!

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, when the going gets tough, the tough get going or maybe they go shopping. I forget which it is. But what about writers? When the going gets tough, they write! And so I have. God, Life and Hula Hoops is the result.

In 2012 I was diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors. Fortunately they were benign, but as I like to say, there are two definitions for benign. One being non- cancerous, the other meaning harmless—which my brain tumors definitely are not!

My life took a dramatic turn with the diagnosis and is still topsy-turvy to this day. Life isn’t always easy, but there is always hope because God doesn’t leave us alone in our battles. Even before I needed them, God taught me what I needed to stay in his peace and joy, in spite of all the difficulties I face because of the tumors.

How did that happen?

By learning to listen FOR and TO God.

Find out how in God, Life and Hula Hoops.

In God, Life and Hula Hoops I share the “spiritual listening lessons” that have helped me face adversity in, what I hope is, a godly way. I may take a light-hearted approach, but the lessons God taught me are not! They are real and they work—at least they have for me!
God still speaks and he can use the oddest things to do so—even a hula hoop!

As a retired speech-language pathologist, Lillian knows the importance of listening. God can speak to us in many different ways. There may be weirder examples, but God used the hula hoop to teach the author new insights as well as remind her of long-forgotten gems of wisdom that have helped her face adversity.

Congratulations on being able to write and deal with your personal problems at the same time, quite an accomplishment by itself. And working for 30 years with kids that are in need of special teaching skills to learn is a most challenging career. Hope all your book ideas are successful but obviously you will continue to write based on what you have done to date. Best wishes always....

Lillian, this is such a timely post. I've heard many people comment that they don't know how to hear God. Thank you for writing this book and I pray many will be blessed by it.

Love your title! :) But I am sorry for your health problems, and hope you are able to overcome them. Good health is so necessary and sometimes we take it for granted (when we're very young and our mind is preoccupied with "play") :)

Wishing you the best in your writing endeavors, and for continued improved healthy years ahead! :)

Love the title and the content. Recently (couple years ago) I lost my oldest cousin to a rare brain tumor. This year Pat's younger brother, Mark, was diagnosed as having the same tumor. It is inoperable and extremely aggressive. Pat had just turned 70 when she passed. Mark is 65 now and undergoing treatment. He's a good candidate from some of the experimental treatments and Johns Hopkins is taking care of him. This book, discussing issues that are already close to my heart, and I'm praying for you and others who deal with this nasty little thing called tumors.

Looking Out the Window: Memories on the Heart

Several weeks ago my husband, Rick, and I ate at a restaurant we frequent fairly regularly. The cute, young waitress who usually waits on us took our orders for burgers and fries. I’ll call her Mandy. As usual Mandy’s smile and bubbly personality brightened our day. We giggled and confessed to her that we shouldn’t eat the fries, but we were going to do it just this once. She joked. “Okay, you’re being bad today.” Not long after we got our food a couple came in and sat in the booth behind us. Mandy walked up to the table with her big grin. “Hi, how are you?” she asked. The man, who had salt and pepper colored hair and a pudgy face, spoke in a harsh tone, “I want the steak.” “Sure, which one would you like?” Mandy asked. “I don’t want you to put it in the microwave. That will make it tough. Do you understand?” Mandy’s lips turned down. “Yes sir, which one do you want to order?” “I want it medium rare. I don’t want blood oozing out of it. I want it cooked right.” “Yes sir, which steak di

It's my pleasure.  I’m happy to share with you a Bible verse and a recipe, and tell you about my newest book! One of my favorite Bible verses is Romans 10:9.  “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” I love this verse because it distills down the message of Christianity to its simplest elements. So often people add to the gospel, but it really all comes down to our belief in Jesus’ saving work on the cross. This verse tends to make its way into my writing. It’s in my latest novel, Moonlight and Mystery, when the heroine, Beth attends a carnival at a

If so, what did you read? I was an avid reader as a child, which I credit to my mom, who read to us and encouraged a love for books. Two of my favorite books were Wacky Wednesday and Harry the Dirty Dog. When I was older, I enjoyed reading Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew, and Little House on the Prairie. Why do you write? Because I can’t not write. It is my ministry and my passion. Tell us about your latest book, Dreams of the Heart   Sometimes the hardest battles take place in the heart. Poverty and abuse at the hands of her drunkard father leaves Hannah Bane trapped and alone. Without hope, she prays for a miracle just on the off-chance God will hear her. Will the handsome new
